This HL biopolymer is a microbial exopolysaccharide built from L-rhamnose, D-glucose, D-glucuronic acid and D-mannose, with 64.7% total carbohydrate, 14.2% uronic acid, 4.6% protein and 16% O-acetyl. What matters operationally is how it behaves when it is hot and saline: it retains about 40% of its viscosity at 80 °C and tolerates mineralisation up to 50,000 mg/L, and even a 20-fold dilution of the fermentate keeps that temperature and salt tolerance. Measured with a rotational viscometer at 50 rpm after 10 hours of temperature soak, the viscosity retention at 80 °C is 47–51% across 10,000–50,000 mg/L mineralisation. At equal concentration its apparent viscosity is higher than that of welan gum, while welan gum holds viscosity better at high temperature — so the two are complementary rather than interchangeable. Core flooding tests at 85 °C and 50,000 mg/L mineralisation have shown it can cut water cut by more than 10% and improve displacement efficiency by over 20%.
Applications
- Thickening brines and high-salinity injection fluids
- High-temperature reservoir and frac fluid systems
- Polymer flooding where salinity tolerance is required
- Mobility control in low-permeability reservoirs
