This microbial oil displacement agent is a live fermentation broth built on a consortium of Bacillus subtilis, Bacillus licheniformis and Pseudomonas sp. The three strains work on different fronts: lipopeptide and rhamnolipid biosurfactants lower oil-water interfacial tension to around 30 mN/m and strip oil films from rock surfaces, while hydrocarbon-oxidising enzymes crack long-chain alkanes above C25. Because Bacillus licheniformis stays metabolically active under anaerobic conditions, the displacement effect keeps working as the slug moves away from the wellbore. It is injected in 0.5%–5% slugs and shut in for 96 hours before production resumes.
Applications
- Waterflooded reservoirs in the high-water-cut stage
- Microbial enhanced oil recovery (MEOR) injection programmes
- Interfacial tension and wettability control in sandstone reservoirs
- Wells where a low-damage alternative to chemical flooding is preferred
